Obituary

Russell Eugene “Rusty” Nix, Jr., 68, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, October 27, 2026.

Born on December 21, 1957, in Pascagoula, Mississippi, Rusty was a 1976 graduate of South Jones High School. In 1977, he married the love of his life, Lisa Lindsey Nix, beginning a beautiful love story that would span nearly 49 years. Together, they built a life centered around love, laughter, family, and the countless memories they made while raising their two daughters, Holly and Lacy.

Rusty spent his working years in the oil field, where he was known for his strong work ethic and dedication. Having recently retired, he was enjoying the simple pleasures of farm life, spending his days outdoors and tinkering with just about any motor he could get his hands on.

An avid outdoorsman, Rusty was happiest near the water with a fishing pole in his hand. Whether fishing, hunting, or simply enjoying the beauty of the outdoors, he appreciated life’s simple pleasures. He also loved to cook, especially when he could add a little Cajun flavor to whatever was on the menu. A proud member of the Crazy K’s Coffee Club, Rusty enjoyed good conversation, plenty of laughter, and the friendships he made along the way.

Rusty never met a stranger, and those fortunate enough to know him quickly learned that he had a heart as big as his personality. He was always willing to lend a helping hand, never hesitating to show up when someone needed him. Above all, Rusty was a devoted husband, loving father, proud grandfather, and loyal friend. He loved his family fiercely, cherished his friendships, and had a way of making everyone feel welcome.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, A.J. and Edily Nix, Madison Roscoe Watkins and Alberta Odom; his parents, Russell Eugene Nix, Sr. and Mildred, and Norman and Mary Lou Gage; and his brother-in-law, Scott Lindsey.

He leaves behind his loving wife of nearly 49 years, Lisa Lindsey Nix; two daughters, Lacy Buckhaults and Holly Windham; four grandchildren, Jack Buckhaults, Anna Windham, Griffin Windham, and Marley Buckhaults; his beloved in-laws, Thomas and Barbara Lindsey; his siblings, Rachelle Freeman (Jerry), Tracy Laird (Tony), Anthony Nix (Stacey), Mary Morgan (Stace), Donavan Gage, and Mike Gage; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.

Rusty’s life was one of hard work, deep love, genuine friendship, and a willingness to help others. Though his passing leaves an immeasurable void in the lives of those who loved him, his memory will live on in the stories shared, the lessons taught, the laughter remembered, and the love he gave so freely.

He never met a stranger, never hesitated to lend a hand, and never missed an opportunity to love his people. He will be deeply missed and forever loved.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, October 31, 2026, at Mt. Vernon Congregational Methodist Church, located on Highway 15 South in Laurel (Glade Community) from 1:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. A Celebration of Life honoring Rusty will be held at 3:00 p.m. Family and friends are invited to gather in remembrance of a man who lived fully, loved deeply, and touched countless lives.
