Ondene (Dene) Walters Johnson, 95, of Bessemer, Alabama, passed away Friday August 9, 2024, in Birmingham, Alabama. Visitation will be held on Friday, August 16, 2024 from 10:30AM until 11:00AM with graveside services to follow at Mill Creek Church Cemetery in Laurel, MS. Burial will follow in Mill Creek Church Cemetery in Laurel, Mississippi. Rev. Jimmy Holder will officiate. Ellisville Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. 601-477-3797.

Mrs. Johnson was born in Laurel, Mississippi on October 5, 1928. She was preceded in death by her husband Thomas Neal (T.N.) Johnson, of Carrollton, Mississippi, whom she married on June 3, 1961; her father, James Thomas Walters; her mother, Stella Bankston Walters and her sister Nanette Walters Byrd.

She was a 1945 graduate of Myrick High School in Laurel, Mississippi where she was Valedictorian of her class. Following High School, she worked at Reliance Company in Laurel, Mississippi until 1947 when she began her career with South Central Bell Telephone Company first in Laurel, MS and continuing when she moved to Jackson, Mississippi in 1962, for 36 years until her retirement in 1983. Ondene relished spending time with her grandchildren and loved gardening with her husband, T.N.

Mrs. Johnson is survived by her daughter Tyra Johnson-Pirtle (Winston), of Birmingham, Alabama; her grandson Neal Winston Pirtle of Nashville, Tennessee; her granddaughter Madora Adele Pirtle of Birmingham, Alabama; and her niece Karen Byrd Bristow of Dothan, Alabama.
