John Larry Hilbun, 78, of Ellisville, MS, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Saturday, January 25, 2025. Born on June 15, 1946, in Soso, Mississippi, Larry was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and educator.
Larry graduated from Ellisville High School and earned a BS Degree in History from The University of Southern Mississippi. He dedicated 33 years to teaching, primarily at Soso Elementary, where he inspired countless 5th and 6th graders.
He was a quiet, simple Christian man and a member of Big Creek Baptist Church. Larry cherished his hobbies, including gardening, turkey hunting, and traveling, always incorporating a history lesson into his trips. Above all, he loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.
Larry is survived by his devoted wife of 53 years, Linda; his daughter Robin Robinson Roney and her husband Brad; his sons Ryan Hilbun and his wife Lauren, and Ron Hilbun and his wife Christy. He leaves behind five grandchildren: Taylor Robinson and his wife Paige, Abby Hilbun, John Ryan Hilbun Jr, Maggie Hilbun, and Grier Hilbun, as well as great grandsons Tripp Robinson and Steele Robinson. He is also survived by his brother Randy Hilbun and his wife Barbara, his sister Janice Jones and her husband Arnold "Red", his sister-in-law Lanell Holifield, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Larry was preceded in death by his parents, Louis and Myrtis Hilbun; his grandparents, John and Agnus Hilbun, and John and Roxi-Anne Graves; his brother Tony Hilbun; his son-in-law Jeff Robinson; his father and mother-in-law Harold and Ollie Pitts; and his brother-in-law Larry Holifield.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, January 29, 2025, from 1:00 PM until 2:00 PM at Ellisville Funeral Home, 1204 B Ave, Ellisville, Mississippi. Funeral services will follow at 2:00 PM at the same location, with burial at Big Creek Cemetery in Soso, Mississippi. Bro. Howard Parker will officiate. Arrangements are under the care of Ellisville Funeral Home.
Pallbearers will be Skipper Atwood, Greg Hilbun, Marc Hutchison, Matthew Hutchison, Joe Robinson, and Geary Wheeler.
