Joe Stephen
Walters
April 29, 1950 – November 5, 2025
Joe Stephen Walters of Ellisville, Mississippi passed away at his residence on November 5, 2025. He was a beloved husband, brother, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Victor Leggett Walters, Jr. and Betty Jean Herndon Walters Campbell. He is survived by Carol, his cherished wife of 54 years, his brother Michael Walters (Jan) of Ellisville, one sister-in-law, Deb Martineau (Lee), and his two sons, Ryan (Candice) and Drew (Gio). He had two grandsons, Dylan (Lily) and Connor, and one great-grandson, Jasper. He had many nieces and nephews.
Born in Ellisville on April 29, 1950. He attended Ellisville High School and graduated from South Jones High School in 1968. He also attended Jones County Junior College and the University of Southern Mississippi. Steve worked for the Post Office in Ellisville and retired after 30 years of service.
With a love for the sports world, one of his favorite pastimes was watching the Jones Bobcat football team, and he could often be found in the stands at every home game and nearly every contest on the road. He also had a lifelong passion for beloved Ole Miss Rebels and enjoyed attending games with his two sons.
But it was on the baseball field where he spent countless hours coaching and mentoring young men at Merchants Park in Ellisville. Not only did he volunteer his time as a coach but also on the board of directors and a stint as President of Jones County Baseball, Inc. His teams were perennial winners, capturing numerous championships and two state titles. Many of his players never forgot the lessons and values they learned from "Coach Steve."
Steve attended Grace Covenant Church in Laurel where he enjoyed the preaching of his pastor, Glenn McElhenny. Steve was kind, friendly, compassionate, a cheerful giver, and a hard worker, often working multiple jobs, values he found in God's Word and for which he devoted his life. Steve knew Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior. Though battling illness most of his life, he fought the good fight. He finished his race. He kept the faith. And God has called him home.
Steve will be deeply missed by all who knew him. He never found a soul he wouldn't talk to, a hand he wouldn't shake, or a hug he wouldn't give to anyone who needed it. His generosity knew no bounds.
