Obituary

Jan Geddie Delk, 84, of Ellisville, passed away on June 24, 2024.

Jan was born August 9, 1939 in Laurel, Mississippi, to Vern Hilbun Geddie and Gertrude Smith Geddie. She grew up in Tuckers Crossing, Mississippi, and later moved to Jackson, Mississippi. Jan graduated from Provine High School in Jackson and attended Hinds Junior College and Belhaven College, majoring in music.

While still in college, Jan was given leadership of the children's choir at Parkway Baptist Church in Jackson. In the early 1960's, she was hired as Head of the Music Department / Choir Director at The Baptist Children's Village in Jackson, where she served for 15 years. The program grew into a well-known outreach ministry, and people from all over made "Christmas Sparkles at the Village" part of their yearly holiday tradition. The BCV musical groups, especially "The Villagers", were in high demand and traveled all over the state.

In the late 70's, Jan moved back to Laurel, Mississippi, where she served as the First Baptist Church secretary and children/youth choir director. When the United Way extended the opportunity, Jan willingly served as the Director of the Pine Belt Region for several years.

Many people will remember Jan for her ownership/leadership involvement with Challenge Country in Ellisville, which was one of the largest and unique ropes course experiences in the southeast United States.

In more recent years, Jan was a member of First Baptist Church of Ellisville, serving her Lord as Children's Choir Director. Jack and Jan enjoyed attending Sunday School together and hosted the FBC Ellisville yearly fall picnic for many years. Jan also served on the Pastor Search Committee, Wednesday Night Supper, and various other committees.

Throughout Jan's life, her consistent calling was to teach children/youth through her God-given musical abilities. Thousands of children's lives were transformed due to her obedience to God's purpose.

Special memories with her grandchildren include playing in the rain, making mudpies, and baking her famous sugar cookies.

On May 25, 2013, Jan married the love of her life, Jack Delk. Together, they enjoyed Mississippi State athletic events, cheering on their grandchildren's pursuits, and traveling all over the country visiting places they both longed to see. Jack and Jan loved serving the Lord together, and they were a shining example of a Godly marriage.

Jan was preceded in death by her parents, Vern and Gertrude, sons Jeff Nix and Rus Nix, grandson lan Nix, and brothers Vern Geddie, Bob Geddie and Don Geddie.
