Obituary

Gerald R. Wansley Sr. ("Jerry")

Gerald R. Wansley Sr., affectionately known as "Jerry," passed away on July 20, 2026, at the age of 85.

Born on January 1, 1941, Jerry was the son of the late Otto Wansley Sr. and Louise Davis Wansley. A graduate of George S Gardner High and went to MSU for a year until he came back to Laurel to marry the love of his life, Janie "Jan" Shoemake Wansley.

Jerry spent his career as a skilled machinist, working alongside his family at Wansley Machine. He also honorably served his country in the Army Reserve.

Jerry was often found on his tractor tending to the land, his dogs, his grands. He was known for having pride in his home and property, and also had a love for animals, especially dogs. He loved working outside and preserving the stories and history of those who came before him. More than anything, Jerry treasured time spent with his loved ones. Whether sharing stories, celebrating holidays, or simply enjoying everyday moments together, he found happiness in being surrounded by his family.

Jerry was a member of Ellisville First Methodist Church.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 66 years, Janie Shoemake Wansley; his son, Gerald R. Wansley Jr. and wife, Holly; and his daughter, Joy Wansley. He also leaves behind his grandchildren, Haley Hagan and her husband, Christian, and Finnegan Pessoney; and his great-grandchildren, Caroline Hagan and Eden Hagan. He is also survived by his brothers, Otto Wansley Jr. and Jack Wansley as well as a large extended family.

Jerry was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers, Lester Wansley and Hugh Wansley; and his sisters, Joyce Blackledge and Betty Bird.

A Graveside service will be held on Thursday, July 23, 2026 at 10:00AM at Lake Park Hills Cemetery in Laurel, MS.
