Don was born on September 15, 1936, in Laurel, Mississippi, the son of Joe C. Scoggin and Elizabeth Clark Scoggin. He was raised in the Pendorff community and attended Pendorff Grammar School and Ellisville High School before continuing his education at Jones County Junior College. While at JCJC, he was a member of the 1955 Junior Rose Bowl and National Championship Football Team. In 1956, he married Janie Myers, who supported him as he pursued further studies. Don earned a bachelor's degree in Geology from Louisiana State University and later a Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy from the University of Mississippi in 1962. Don began his career as a pharmacist in Greenville, Mississippi before returning to Ellisville. He worked for a local pharmacy for four years until 1967, when he opened Don's Drugs. He owned and operated the pharmacy until his retirement in 2000. Following his retirement, Don devoted himself to caring for his wife, Janie, until her passing in 2005. In 2006, Don married Lucy Upton, and the two shared nineteen years together.
Don was well known in his community not only for his service as a pharmacist, but for his generous heart and love of life. He was an avid traveler who often took off on lengthy adventures in his motorhome. He also enjoyed gardening, caring for the ducks and geese that lived on his pond, and cheering on Mississippi State University sports teams.
Don was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife of forty-nine years, Janie Myers Scoggin, and his brother, Dr. Joe C. Scoggin. He is survived by his wife of nineteen years, Lucy Upton Scoggin; his sons, Donnie Scoggin (Donna), Jay Scoggin (Tammie), and Patrick Scoggin (Cellie).
