Obituary

Carey "Red" Bartran McGill, 84, of Ovett, MS, passed away on Monday, September 22, 2025, at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, Mississippi. Born on February 2, 1941, in Jasper County, Mississippi. Red was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend.

Red was a graduate of Sandersville High School, where he lettered in football, and he continued his education at Jones County Junior College. He later attended Mississippi State University, earning a Bachelor of Science Degree in Animal Husbandry. Red began his career teaching at Decatur High School before becoming the Farm Manager at Ellisville State School, where he dedicated 30 years of service. He also worked at Shows Brothers in Ellisville.

Known for his green thumb, Red was an avid farmer who grew an amazing vegetable garden each summer, sharing his bounty with family and friends. He cherished his herd of cattle, his beautiful red rose garden, and the time spent on the front porch with loved ones. Red's sense of humor and storytelling were legendary, and he was deeply devoted to his faith, living and loving like his savior.

Red was preceded in death by his son, Jason McGill; daughter, Kim McGill; father, James Nolan McGill; mother, Edna Grace Huddleston McGill; and brother, Edward McGill. He is survived by his loving wife, Jo Ann Hyatt McGill; son, Mike McGill (Terri); sisters, Carolyn Weeks and Rita Hoffman (Richard); grandchildren, Tyler McCree, Kimberly McGill, Laken McGill, and Brett McGill; sister-in-law, Judy McGill; his constant companion, Weezie; and several nieces and nephews who affectionately referred to him as a gentle giant.

Graveside services will be held on Wednesday, September 24, 2025, at 10:00 AM at Red McGill Cemetery in Ovett, MS, with burial to follow. Bro. Harold Rowzee will officiate. Arrangements are under the care of Ellisville Funeral Home.

Pallbearers will be Brett McGill, Nathan Reid, Lane Thomas, Danny Thead, Lee Cotten, Tony Poole, Tyler McCree, and John Davis.
